A family farm, diversified
About Us
A family farm in Powick, diversified into a maize maze in 2006 — and still run by the same family today.
How this began
The Great Worcester Maize Maze began life as a dairy farm on the outskirts of Worcester, run by Rob and Clare Colton and their daughters Rosie and Effie. The maize growing in one of the fields was destined for cattle feed, grown to keep the farm's 60 Holstein cows fed through the winter.
In 2006, looking for a way to diversify, the family cut their first maze into that same field. It was Rosie who researched similar attractions and spotted the potential — a field with good visibility from the main road, ready to become something more than cattle feed.
The farm has changed since then. We no longer milk cows, and today we focus on beef and sheep alongside a smaller amount of arable land. But the maze has stayed a constant, and the maize we grow for it is still put to good use as livestock feed once the season ends.
What guides us
What you'll find here
Family-run
every visitor is looked after by the people who actually grow the maze.
Genuinely seasonal
the maize, sunflowers and pumpkins you see are real crops, not props.
Relaxed by design
a courtyard to sit in, hills to look at, and no rush to move on.
Welcoming to all
children, dogs and groups of friends are all part of the mix here.
Just as important
This isn't a theme park
-
We're not a theme park — there are no rides, queues or characters in costume.
-
We're not open all year — we follow the growing season, so the maze exists for a few months and then it's gone.
-
We're not immune to the weather — we're an outdoor attraction, and the odd day is lost to rain.
-
We're not trying to be anything other than a genuine family farm having families over for the day.
The people behind it
Meet the family
Rob Colton
Farmer & Co-Founder
Rob has farmed this land in Powick his whole working life. What started as a maize field grown for cattle feed became the maze in 2006 — Rob still manages the farm today, alongside beef and sheep.
Clare Colton
Co-Founder
Clare co-founded the maze alongside Rob in 2006, turning a spare field into a family day out that has welcomed visitors from across Worcestershire ever since.
Rosie Colton
The idea behind it all
It was Rosie who first researched maize mazes and spotted the potential in the field beside the main road — the idea that started it all back in 2006.
Effie Colton
Growing up with the maze
Effie grew up alongside the maze and now helps keep the family tradition going for the next generation of visitors.
We wanted somewhere people could sit in the courtyard, enjoy the view of the Malvern Hills, and let the kids play — before heading into the maze together as a family.
